Song of the Day: Confessions of a MILF by Viv Albertine

Viv Albertine, formerly of punk band The Slits, supported Siouxsie at the Royal Festival Hall on Monday 17 June.

It was only the day before that I realised she would be supporting and discovered Confessions of a MILF. It’s a catchy track but sounds very complicated and when it was performed live I was very impressed.

It starts off lively enough and then enters the chant of ‘home sweet home.’ What comes next is what sounds like a bunch of pointless lyrics but really they’re just setting the scene. Her voice is sickly sweet, but that’s just because she’s playing a character and has also managed to keep the humour within the lyrics.

In the background you can hear someone else chanting another set of fast-paced lyrics but can’t quite make out what’s being said, which adds to the complexity of this song. At times Albertine’s voice is deeper than the rest of the vocals, I think this highlights the two different sides of the character.

Towards the end the lyrics are repeated and the unintelligible chanting in the background is finally understood as Albertine brings it to the fore and continues whizzing through it.

By the time the track is over you realise that you didn’t actually listen to the lyrics because you were so focused on all the different features that cropped up so figure it’s worth another listen. This is the start of your journey down a very sloppy slope.

There’s so much to hear that each listen is different and it becomes an addiction. The song itself is an incredible feat because there is so much in it but it doesn’t, at any point, get overwhelmed.

This is why it’s my song of the day, partly because I’m addicted but mostly because I’m very impressed by it.
