Song of the Day: Pretty Me by Laura Jansen

I discovered this artist thanks to Self-Help for Creatively Deprived and I’ve listened to a few of Laura Jansen’s songs and it was a tough choice as to which I should choose for Song of the Day, so I went with the first song of hers I heard.

As you can see that song was Pretty Me which, to me, is an ironic title. The vocals are pretty but the lyrics are not, when you listen to them you realise that this story she’s singing about is one that you don’t want anyone to live.

It is a very well written song and grasps your attention without much effort because Jansen has such a beautiful voice, she reminds me a little bit of Laura Marling and Christina Perri. She has great control over her voice and as she’s singing it sounds like she’s actually lost in a memory, which makes it all the more mesmerising.

The track slowly builds up and lets the tension out at the chorus, this is where her voice is strongest as if she’s convincing herself of the truth, whereas, throughout the verses she sounds reminiscent and sad and it’s hypnotic.

If you want to check out more from Laura Jansen then definitely have a listen to Queen of Elba.

Thanks for the mention! I love Laura Jansen, she has this incredible voice and she uses it to sing real songs with messages of struggle and love.
