Song of the Day: Please Don’t Say You Love Me by Gabrielle Aplin

If you’re sitting there thinking you recognise the name or perhaps the voice that would be because she’s the star of the new John Lewis Christmas advert.

Forget the snowman and woman, when it comes to these adverts it’s all about the song and how well it’s covered. So, if you’ve watched TV or listened to the radio lately you would have heard her calming vocals splashed all over Power of Love.

Anyway, I decided to give her other tracks a listen and this one really struck me. Her voice is completely charming and, I think, the thing to remember about Please Don’t say You Love Me is that it’s not a love song, it’s more of a falling in love song.

It starts quite jauntily with a catchy beat at the beginning and the vocals are paced nicely, giving a smooth start to the song. AS the track develops it begins to steer away from that beat, which has become tha backbone.

Really it is a sweet track and actually there’s a sense of insecurity and hesitancy to the lyrics, making them more endearing. They are beautifully written with a touch of humanity to them.

Power of Love might be her big single now, but when this song is released next year it will be all over the radio.

What are your thoughts on it?
