Cultivating great musical taste

Song of the Day: Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine

Yeah okay, so this is a song that had a lot of radio play and has becomes a steadfast favourite of Florence’s fans and it’s really really really good. It’s my favourite Florence song ever and I fell in love with it long before it turned up on the radio.

It starts off so dreamy and fantasy like, helped a lot by the harp twinkling along in the background and Florence’s amazing control over her powerful voice. Then she inserts a hard edge to it, bringing it crashing back down to reality. Her voice is such an amazing instrument in itself, it blows you away. It goes so well with that wonderful mix of harp and drums and while the track is playing you can’t help but think that there can be no better musician. Who else could possibly produce such beautiful sounds?

But it’s not just the music, it’s the words too. There are stories that Florence came up with the lyrics whilst lying on her back in the recording studio, she was with her producer and just sang the lines that came to her head. It apparently had him in tears. And if you listen closely to the lyrics, with all the grandeur taken away, you can understand why.

They’re full of hurt and pain, they’re raw and excellently written. But they’re also tinged with hope which adds that extra layer to the song. The words are powerful  stay with you and can mean so much depending on how you look at them. Not to mention the fact that they are delivered brilliantly.

When she performs it live it is phenomenal, it’s such a wonderful song and is probably one of my all time favourites tracks.
