Song of the Day: Sea of Love by Cat Power

In a couple of these posts I’ve mentioned how some songs belong in a movie soundtrack. Well, this is exactly where I found this one. I absolutely love Juno as a film and one of the main reasons for it is the soundtrack. It is such a varied but awesomely touching soundtrack and Sea of Love is the one song that truly stands out from the rest.

It’s such a sad song, both in content and performance. It’s hauntingly beautiful but it doesn’t put you in a sad mood. Personally I’m too busy tracking the vocals, listening to those breaks in her voice that add so much more emotion to the track, too busy listening to the simplistic but lovely tune in the background to become too saddened by it. But even so, depressing songs are often the best. They strike a certain chord that almost everyone can relate to.

The lyrics are simple and straightforward but so beautiful and effective. It’s a short, bittersweet ditty with so much emotion and passion stuffed into it.
